Central India – Enchanting state Madhya Pradesh

The heart of India, the state of Madhya Pradesh lies in the center of the country on Tropic of Cancer. Along with erstwhile Chhattisgarh now separated it was the largest state in India. MP is a diverse land with forest ecosystem dominating while rich in history. The River Narmada originates from Amarkantak and traverse vast distance betwixt Vindhaya and Satpura ranges finally merging into the Arabian Sea at Bahruch in Gujarat.  The Son River also emerges from the mountains of Amarkantak and merges into holy Ganga.    

The state is ideal for the eco traveler with wildlife parks Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Panna, Pench and Ken river sanctuary for fresh water crocodiles as mainstay of ecotourism in India. Madhya Pradesh boasts a robust number of tigers in its tiger reserves with amazing wildlife biodiversity and enchanting topography. MP offers best tiger safaris and wildlife watching in India with many keystones species in its preserves.

The state is home to the famous Khajuraho Temples carved out of rocks in 10th and 11th centuries. Pachmarhi is the only hill station developed so far and is a virtual paradise of canyons, forested hills and rivers and lakes. It is a holy pilgrimage center for the Hindus being abode of the Lord Shiva. Jabalpur is the epi-center of wildlife tourism with Bedaghat falls and Marble Rocks as main attraction for transit tourists. Other places of interest are Chuasath Yogini, Madan Mahal, Narmada Riverside and numerous picnic spots that amaze the tourists to no end.       

The major towns Gwalior, Indore and Bhopal encompass ancient Hindu, Mogul and pre independence history. The main attractions are numerous palaces, forts and temples. Along with Jabalpur they are main industrial towns and commercial hubs.

Other places of interest:

Ujjain
on River Shipra the holy town and pilgrimage center for Hindus. Kumbh Mela is held here after 12 years by rotation. Shiva temple is main traction of Ujjain.     

Mandu: Historical town with enchanting, palaces, forts, temples and exquisitely carved Chattris.

Jhansi: The kingdom of Rani Laksmi bai the warrior queen who fought for India’s independence.  

Orchha: The royal town of Orchha lies on the Betwa river and is at a short distance from Jhansi. The main attractions are temples, palaces, forts and Chattris. 

Hindi is the main language spoken and English usage is widespread for the comfort of the tourists. Bhopal is the capital city and is well connected. The road network spans widely across the state and numerous hotels, resorts and lodges provide ideal accommodation, boarding and lodging according one’s budget. Law an Order prevails in the state although caution is advised in regions touching Uttar Pradesh especially the Chambal region. Politically it is a well governed state with virtually no chaos anywhere.    

Madhya Pradesh is surrounded by major states of India - UP, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Rajasthan.
