Temples
of Khajuraho
Khajuraho is a small town at
district of Chhatarpur in MP, India.
Archeological wonders rediscovered have made
this town famous in the whole World. The
temples dedicated to Hindu deities depict
Kama Sutra on many of their walls. The
temples were built by the Chandela dynasty
in medieval Hindu era in 10th and 11th
century AD.
With passage of history
Khajuraho temples were lost to modern
civilization. They were rediscovered during
the British Rule in 19th century.
By this time the temples had lost much of
their sheen and glory and were found to be
desecrated by the Mughals.
The temples exhibit sexual imagery of
humans, animals and angels intertwined in
various erotic poses. They are thought to be
learning grounds for young princes awaiting
adulthood. All the erotic carvings on stones
are in the outside walls far away from the
deities. Not all temples contain these
carvings.
